Recognizing and celebrating remarkable seniors in Lower Mainland B.C. making a big impact in their communities
AgeCare proudly hosted its annual Seniors of Distinction Awards Gala on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the Metrotown Banquet Hall, recognizing the extraordinary achievements of seniors who have made lasting contributions in the areas of healthy living, community service, leadership and the arts.
The gala, held on National Seniors Day, brought together family members, community leaders and honourees for an afternoon of celebration, inspiration and heartfelt recognition. AgeCare’s Vice President for BC Operations, Khairun Jivani, opened the event by expressing gratitude to all the nominees for their ongoing dedication and impact.
“We are here this afternoon to honour the remarkable individuals who have not only dedicated their lives to bettering themselves, but have also enriched our community through their leadership, creativity, and commitment to service. They inspire us all, and we are honoured to recognize their achievements,” said Khairun Jivani.
Award Winners:
- Arts Award – The Arts Award was presented to Merv Magus, an extraordinary cartoonist for over 40 years whose work continues to entertain and bring smiles to people’s faces. He has contributed cartoons to several sports teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, the BC Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
- Healthy Living – The Healthy Living Award was presented to Shirley Low, who, despite several medical setbacks, continues to live and thrive independently. At the age of 74, she exercises four times a week, and each setback has only strengthened her determination to get back to a good state of health.
- Leadership Award –The Leadership Award was presented to Yashmin Kassam for her dedication to her community and for volunteering her time at numerous organizations. Yashmin trains new volunteers at AgeCare Harmony Court Estate’s General Store, initiated a Welcome Committee, and continues to volunteer within the Ismaili Community
- Community Service Award –The Community Service Award was presented to Gary Lake for his commitment and dedication as a volunteer driver, ensuring that seniors can attend medical appointments safely and comfortably. He is always willing to give his time and resources to help others and make them feel cared for.
